We just wanted to save a video. That's it. But every tool we found had something wrong with it:

- Mandatory sign-ups just to download a single 30-second clip
- "Free" tools that secretly cap your downloads and demand payment
- Slow, bloated sites that take longer to load than the video itself
I spent 20 minutes trying to download one TikTok. Three different sites. Two sign-up forms. One malware warning. I decided to build it myself.

One person, one failed download attempt after another, and the decision to stop searching and start building. The first prototype was ugly but it worked — in under 5 seconds.
First Expansion
Beyond YouTube
Friends started using it. Then their friends. Requests poured in for TikTok, Instagram, Twitter. We added platform support one by one, keeping the same speed-first philosophy.
Growth
Word Spread Organically
No marketing budget. No ads. Just a tool that worked so well people told each other about it. Reddit threads, Discord servers, group chats — VideoThief grew because it deserved to.
